Basilica Cistern

  • Tip: Crowds build up fast after mid-morning, especially when cruise ships are in port. Try visiting in the late afternoon or early evening for a quieter experience.

  • Your ticket lets you skip the long lines, but you’ll still need to go through the security check.

  • Even in summer, the air inside is cool and damp; bring a light layer to stay comfortable.

  • Footwear matters; choose shoes with a good grip to avoid slipping on the wet stone floor.

  • The entrance has a ramp, and a platform lift is available at the exit, but the inside has uneven flooring. Bring along a companion to stroll around with ease.

  • Bluetooth headphones do not function properly underground, so opt for wired ones if using an audio guide.

  • Flash photography is not allowed.

  • The Medusa heads are easy to miss. Follow the full path to the end, and view them from all angles.

  • Pause in the central section and listen. The soft echoes and dripping water create a surreal ambiance.

  • Look for reflections in the still water beneath the columns; they make for dramatic, moody photos.

  • Give your eyes a moment to adjust to the low lighting before snapping pictures.

I finally got to visit the great Hagia Sophia. While getting to explore the upper level was a blessing, I don't understand why the lower level is off limits. Even the Blue Mosque is open to non-Muslims. If I had gotten to explore the lower level, my visit would have been perfect. This is not Headout's fault, but something that is on my mind.

Thanks to the queue-cutting ticket, we were able to enter Saint Sophia easily. We visited the second floor, as the ground floor is a place of prayer. It's a place where Catholic and Muslim cultures meet. What to see

Hagia Sophia | Cathedral-turned-mosque

Hagia Sophia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the heart of Istanbul. It was first built in the 6th century as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral but later turned into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation in Turkey. Today, Hagia Sophia is an iconic melting pot of a myriad of cultures. Read on to learn more about the Hagia Sophia, how to book Hagia Sophia skip-the-line tickets, and other details to plan your visit.

Things to know before you book Hagia Sophia tickets

  • Choose Hagia Sophia skip-the-line tickets to bypass long lines and access the second level of the mosque. Visit the newly-launched Experience Museum for a deeper insight into the history of the church-turned-mosque.
  • Opt for a guided tour to fully understand the long and complex history of Hagia Sophia, which is nearly 1,500 years old.
  • There is a mandatory security check before entering Hagia Sophia, so expect a considerable wait time – about 30 minutes on average and up to 60 minutes in the high season.
  • Since Hagia Sophia is a place of worship, visitors must follow a dress code. Both men and women are required to wear appropriate and respectful clothing that covers the shoulders, chest, and knees. Women also need to cover their hair with a scarf.
  • Since Hagia Sophia is an active mosque, it is closed for non-worshippers during player times. Ensure you check these timings and plan your visit accordingly.
  • While most of Hagia Sophia is wheelchair-friendly, certain areas may not be easy to navigate by wheelchair users or those with limited mobility due to steps and cobblestone pathways.
